Blepharoplasty in Katowice – eyelid surgery

Upper, lower or combined eyelid surgery, planned individually after an examination by an oculoplastic surgeon. Below we explain who it can help, how it works and what you can realistically expect.

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is surgical correction of the eyelids. Depending on the problem, the surgeon removes or repositions excess skin, a strip of the orbicularis muscle and bulging fat. The aim is a fresher look around the eyes and, in some cases, a wider field of vision when a heavy upper lid hangs over the eye.

Blepharoplasty is not one identical operation. Upper and lower eyelids are operated on differently, and the extent of surgery is decided by the examination, not by the name of the procedure. That is why every operation at Oculy starts with an oculoplastic consultation.

Types of blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery

The most common eyelid operation. It treats excess skin that rests on the lashes, forms a “hood” over the eye and makes you look tired. The incision lies in the natural eyelid crease, so the scar is usually hard to see once healed.

Lower eyelid surgery

Mainly for under-eye bags – bulging orbital fat – and lax, crepey lower-lid skin. Depending on the anatomy, it is performed from the inside of the lid (no skin scar) or through an incision just below the lash line.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery

Some patients have concerns with both eyelids. The surgeon may then suggest a combined operation or two separate stages, depending on your health, the extent of correction and the recovery you can plan for.

When to consider blepharoplasty

  • excess upper-lid skin that makes make-up difficult or rests on the lashes,
  • heavy eyelids by the end of the day, raising your brows to see better,
  • under-eye bags that do not go away during the day,
  • lax, wrinkled lower-lid skin,
  • looking tired or sad despite being well rested.

Not every droopy eyelid needs blepharoplasty. A lid margin that sits too low is often ptosis, and heavy lids can be caused by low brows. These are different problems with different treatments – see our guide to droopy eyelids.

Qualification

During the consultation the doctor assesses eyelid and brow position, the amount of excess skin, the strength of the eyelid-lifting muscle, the tear film and your general health. You will be asked about medication (especially blood thinners), thyroid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, previous eye surgery and dry eye.

Blepharoplasty is elective, so it is not performed during an infection, with poorly controlled chronic conditions, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. See the full list on risks and contraindications.

How the procedure works

  1. Preparation. You will receive instructions about tests and medication. Never stop blood thinners on your own – this is decided with your doctor.
  2. Marking. The surgeon marks the plan with you sitting up, when the lids fall naturally.
  3. Anaesthesia. Eyelid surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia. You are awake but feel no pain.
  4. Surgery. It usually takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the extent. The wound is closed with fine stitches.
  5. Going home. After a short observation you return home or to your hotel the same day, with written aftercare instructions.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising appear in the first days and peak on day 2–3. Stitches usually come out after 5–7 days. Most people return to desk work after 7–10 days and to sport after 3–4 weeks. The scar matures over several months and the final result is judged at 3–6 months. See the week-by-week guide to recovery after blepharoplasty.

Results and limitations

Well-performed blepharoplasty looks natural: your eyes look rested, not “operated on”. Upper-lid results usually last many years, although the skin continues to age. Surgery does not remove crow's feet, dark circles or pigmentation, and it does not change brow position. See real cases in our before and after gallery.

Blepharoplasty cost in Katowice

The cost depends on the extent of surgery (upper, lower or both lids) and on whether you choose the procedure alone or a package with accommodation and support. Current prices and what they include are listed on our prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Is blepharoplasty painful?

It is done under local anaesthesia, so during surgery you feel at most the injection. Afterwards you may feel tightness and discomfort, usually well controlled with cold compresses and the painkillers recommended by your doctor.

Will there be a scar?

In upper-lid surgery the scar sits in the natural crease and is usually barely visible once healed. In lower-lid surgery it runs just below the lashes or there is no skin scar at all (inner-lid approach). Scar healing is individual.

Does eyelid surgery improve vision?

If excess upper-lid skin blocks the upper part of your field of vision, removing it can improve visual comfort. Blepharoplasty does not improve sharpness of vision and does not replace glasses.

How much time off work do I need?

For desk work usually 7–10 days. Longer for physical work, dusty environments or strenuous jobs. Your doctor will advise.

Can upper and lower eyelids be operated on at the same time?

Yes, if your health and the extent of correction allow it. A combined operation means one recovery, but usually somewhat more swelling. Both options are discussed at the consultation.
